2 Year Old Chandler Blueberries

Chandler blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Chandler’) are renowned for their large, sweet berries and extended harvest period, making them a popular choice for home gardens. These highbush blueberries can reach 4 to 5 feet in height when mature. They thrive in full sun and well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5). The berries are among the largest produced by any blueberry variety, often reaching the size of a quarter, and are known for their excellent flavor.

Upon receiving shipped plants, inspect the roots and soak them in water for an hour before planting. Choose a pot at least 16-20 inches wide and deep, with good drainage. Fill it with a high-quality acidic potting mix, such as one formulated for azaleas or camellias.

Plant the blueberry bush at the same depth it was in the nursery pot, ensuring the crown is not buried. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch with pine bark or sawdust to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Fertilize with a slow-release, acid-forming fertilizer in early spring and again in late spring. Prune annually in late winter to remove dead or weak branches and encourage new growth. Protect the plants from birds with netting during fruiting season. Chandler blueberries are self-pollinating but benefit from cross-pollination with another variety for better yield. Enjoy the harvest from mid-July to late August.

Chandler blueberries not only provide delicious fruit but also add ornamental value with their attractive foliage and flowers. In the fall, the leaves turn a beautiful red color, adding seasonal interest to your garden. With proper care, Chandler blueberries can produce a bountiful harvest for many years.
